how to crochet | viaduct stitch
This stitch really reminds me of the Arcade Stitch, only prettier, yes?
It’s a vintage stitch and whilst it does have quite a long repeat, I do think that in this case it is very worth it.
I have detailed the stitch pattern in both UK and US terminology below and there is also a link to the video tutorial for the stitch if you haven’t seen that already. You can use any weight yarn you like, please just be sure to use a corresponding hook size. For the stitch tutorial I used Rowan Softyak DK weight yarn in the shade Peat (which I’m rather fond of), and my favourite Clover Soft Touch 4mm hook.
PATTERN | UK TERMINOLOGY
Chain in multiples of 8 + 2.
Row 1. 1dc in 2nd chain from hook, 1dc in each of next 2sts, *ch5, miss 3sts, 5dc, repeat from * ending with ch5, miss 3sts, 3dc, turn.
Row 2. ch3, 1dc in third dc, *9dtr in ch5 loop, 1dc in next dc, ch2, miss 3dc, 1dc in next dc, repeat from * ending with 1dc, ch1, 1dc in last dc, turn.
Row 3. ch8, *1dc in fourth, fifth and sixth dtr of group, ch3, 1trtr in ch2 space, ch3, repeat from * ending with ch3, 1trtr under last ch3, turn.
Row 4. ch5, *1dc in space, 1dc in each of next 3dc, 1dc in next space (giving you 5dc in total), ch5, miss trtr, repeat from * ending ch5, 1dc in fourth of turning chain, turn.
Row 5. ch4, 4dtr in first ch5 space, *1dc in first dc, ch2, 1dc in last dc, 9dtr in next ch5 space, repeat from * ending with 5dtr in last ch5 space, turn.
Row 6. ch1, 1dc in first and second dtr, *ch3, 1trtr in ch2 space, ch3, 1dc in fourth, fifth and sixth dtr, repeat from * ending with ch3, 1dc in fourth dtr, 1dc in top of turning chain, turn.
Row 7. ch1, 1dc in each dc and 1dc in next space (3dc in total), *ch5 miss trtr, 1dc in next space, 1dc in 3dc, 1dc in next space, repeat from * ending with 1dc in last space, 1dc in last 2dc, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 - 7 for pattern.
