new pattern | wych elm socks
The Wych Elm socks came about after I started playing around with the traditional elm grain stitch pattern and stretching it out over a greater number of rows to try and make the little grains pop out even more. I thought that these grains would look nice with skeins of pretty speckled sock yarn.
For my main colour I used Cerinthe from Wild Rose Yarn on Etsy which it has the perfect amount of speckles to show off this stitch pattern perfectly. I paired it with a solid from Opal Uni 4ply in the colour Violet (3072) which seems to be one of my favourites because I’ve used it for heels and toes at least three other times!
The socks are worked cuff down over 64 stitches with a traditional heel flap and gusset. The pattern is written using the magic loop sock knitting method.
The name of the socks comes from the book I was reading at the time, Wych Elm by Tana French (I’m a big fan).
It’s such an unusual book, one of those that seems to be going happily along in one direction and then completely switches half way through so that you’re not sure what’s going, what to think, or even what type of book you’re actually reading, ha!
I loved it and highly recommend it.
I also loved that the name of the book matched the name of my stitch pattern and that’s how these socks got their name.
You can buy the Wych Elm pattern from Ravelry here or via Etsy here, I’ve offered both sales points this time around because I’m aware of the accessibility issues with Ravelry’s new site design which you can no longer opt out of (such a shame, it gives me a big headache).
Also from this launch onwards I will only be offering launch discounts to my newsletter subscribers. If you would like to be on this list you can join here and please note that your data will only be used by me and not sold or shared with any other third party. You can also unsubscribe at any time.
Happy Easter folks and enjoy your knitting.
