how to crochet | vintage two colour border squares

This gem of a granny square pattern was squirrelled away in an edition of Mon Tricot from 1971, hidden deep within a very funky dress pattern.

I’d seen the dress picture and wondered how on earth they got the square, which is part of the lacy dress border, to look the way they did.

So of course I had to try it out for myself and it is wonderful, a genius idea from 51 years ago!!!!

Please do note that this is not my pattern, it is the property of Mon Tricot Magazine, 1971 and I’m just sharing it in the spirit of vintage enjoyment.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do. The pattern tutorial is worked in DK weight yarn but you can of course use any weight yarn you like, just make sure you adjust your hook size accordingly.

YOU WILL NEED

  • any DK weight yarn in two different colours

  • I’ve used a variety of different DK weight yarns for my samples including Stylecraft Special DK.

  • For the tutorial I used two different colours of DK weight yarn from Indie Yarn Club, I don’t know the names of the colours.

  • a 4mm hook - my beautiful hook is from Pedro’s Plaques on Etsy.
