how to crochet | vertical scallop stitch
I had swatched this stitch for a design project a while back and whilst it didn’t make it to the punch, it still captured my heart a little bit and so I thought I would share it with you.
It’s a vintage stitch and has a very simple one row repeat - always the best kind of stitch if you ask me. It has a loose open work finish but the vertical columns of trebles gives this stitch a good bit of structure, making it useful for all kinds of patterns including, and especially, clothing.
The project I originally swatched this for was a summer top and I still might use it in this way because it looked pretty darn fabulous even though it didn’t get picked.
You can get the stitch pattern in both UK and US terminology below and there is also a link to a video tutorial for the stitch. You can use any weight yarn you like, please just be sure to use a corresponding hook size. For the stitch tutorial I used Cascade 220 aran weight yarn in the shade Burnt Orange and a 5mm hook.
PATTERN | UK TERMINOLOGY
Chain in multiples of 7
Row 1. 3tr in 4th chain from hook, miss 2sts, 1dc, *ch3, miss 3sts, 3tr in next st, miss 2sts, 1dc; repeat from * to end.
Row 2. ch3, 3tr in dc at the base of the ch3, 1dc in 3ch space, *ch3, 3tr in dc, 1dc in 3ch space; repeat from * to end working final dc under beginning ch3.
Repeat Row 2 for pattern.

Chain in multiples of 7
Row 1. 3dc in 4th chain from hook, miss 2sts, 1sc, *ch3, miss 3sts, 3dc in next st, miss 2sts, 1sc; repeat from * to end.
