new pattern | london blanket
I designed and made this blanket in 2015!
I KNOW!
I posted pictures of it on Instagram in January 2016 clearly intending to launch it as a pattern and then, for some inexplicable reason, I just never got round to it.
For the record, I do know how bonkers that sounds.
The original idea was to create four of the big version (top picture) and each one was going to be given a name from London (West End, Piccadilly, Sloane Square, Kings Cross) and then the whole blanket was going to be called the London Blanket.
The thing is the first one I made (again top picture) worked up fairly big, much bigger than I originally intended, and so realising the full potential of this pattern sort of flew out the window when it was clear the final blanket was going to be flipping ginormous! Basically it put me off.
Fast forward three years and I found the original sample in the bottom of a basket (this happens far more than I’m comfortable admitting), pulled it out, loved it all over again and started working on writing up the pattern and tinkering about with some new designs.
The thing about this pattern is that it has so much potential, so many options for making fabulous stuff that I have gone so far as to call it a recipe, rather than a pattern.
You can just take the basic pattern repeat and go for it, create amazing things out of something that is relatively simple to crochet, because let’s face it, it really is just a different way of making a granny blanket.
You can make your London blanket to any size you like, it all works; small blankets, mini square blankets, gigantic blankets, just keep going until the blanket (or your modules) are the size you want.
The pattern can be made with any size yarn, my pastel version is made using fingering weight yarn and a 3.75mm hook and all my other samples are made using DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook but any weight yarn will work as long as you use the recommended hook size. The only thing I would suggest is not mixing yarn weights because this will pull the pattern out of shape.
The pattern is available now on Ravelry and it comes complete with the basic recipe plus four patterning options; two full blankets and two modular designs. I also suggest a whole load of other design ideas for you to try out.
As a special Christmas gift the pattern is free for the month of December, no code is needed, you can just download the pattern here and get started right away.
I hope you enjoy, happy hooking y’all and a very Merry Christmas to you too x
