how to crochet | hoosier stitch
The Hoosier Stitch is a well-loved traditional stitch pattern that results in a solid fabric with a lot of textured interest and a nice waved, almost shelled, edged. Thismeans that it would work well as a blanket stitch or for any pattern that requires density, or that you don’t want to edge.
I used the Hoosier Stitch for my Chunky Teal Cowl pattern, which featured in Love Crochet Magazine back in 2016. I wear this cowl for dog walking whenever it is too cold for my face to work properly and just cover my face up rather like a very bulky (and bright) balaclava. Hurrah!
Over Christmas somebody had asked that I do a tutorial for this stitch and so here I am, working it up in an aran weight yarn (Cascade 220) and a 5mm hook.
The original stitch pattern is from Anne Raybun Ough’s classic book, New Directions in Crochet but I have slightly modified the pattern to take into account that I use a turning chain of 3ch for working with treble crochet and she uses 2ch which doesn’t work out so well for me.
The reason I like the hoosier stitch so much is that it is a simple one row repeat and yet looks really effective, especially that wavey edge.
